Workplace Health and Safety
SEIU Local 175 holds workplace safety to a very standard. Our goal is that every member goes home after your shift injury free. Our Shop Stewards that are designated as your departments Safety Compliance, work closely with Princeton EHS. The stewards for Safety Compliance are listed on the Shop Steward List and Leadership sections of the website. As Safety Compliance their job isn't to look for safety issues. Their job is to address safety issues that you as an employee have brought to the Universities attention repeatedly, and no action was taken to correct it. Ensuring that workplace safety matters in all departments. Increasing awareness about possible dangers and encouraging safe behaviors cultivates an overall safe working environment.
10- Tips For Workplace Safety
- Protective gear: “Personal protective equipment is your last line of defense against workplace hazards. Wear it with pride.”

Material handling: “Lift with your legs, not your back, and use proper lifting equipment when available. When transporting equipment/materials ensure they are properly strapped down and not exceeding the limits of the vehicle.”
- Stay alert: “Always be aware of your surroundings while working. Staying alert prevents accidents.”
- Sun protection: “If you work outdoors, protect yourself from the sun. Wear sunscreen, hats, and UV-protective clothing.”
- Stay hydrated: “Drinking enough water is crucial for your health. Take regular water breaks.”
- Hygiene practices: “Clean hands save lives. Wash your hands thoroughly and often, especially before handling food.”
- Travel safety: “Stay aware of your surroundings, there is pedestrians, bicycles, and motor vehicles consistently on the move. Keep emergency contacts handy.”
- Use the right tools: “Always use the correct tool for the job. Improvising can lead to injuries. Ensure electric cords and not damaged or frayed."
- Continuous learning: “Stay informed about new safety practices and technologies. Ongoing education is key to a safe work environment.”
- Follow procedures: “Safety procedures exist for a reason. Follow them every time, no shortcuts.”
