About SEIU Local 175

A Legacy of Service, Strength & Solidarity

Founded on March 14, 1942, SEIU Local 175 was originally chartered as Local 175 of the Building Service Employees International Union. When the international union changed its name in 1968, Local 175 became part of the Service Employees International Union.

Today, SEIU Local 175 proudly represents approximately 750 Princeton University employees working across Athletics Grounds, Building Services, Campus Dining, Facilities, Landscape Grounds, Logistics, Mail Services, Sanitation and Site Protection.

Since approximately 1981, our Summer Transfer Program has supported member career development, created valuable workplace opportunities, and produced many meaningful success stories throughout our proud union community together.

Our Shared History

The History of SEIU

The Service Employees International Union was founded in Chicago on April 23, 1921, as the Building Service Employees International Union. Its earliest members included janitors, elevator operators and window washers. As its membership expanded, the union adopted the name Service Employees International Union in 1968.
